Prime Coat- It is typically have been spray applications of low viscosity asphalt on granular base in preparation for placing an asphalt mixture. A prime coat performs several important functions:
• Coats and bonds loose mineral particles on the surface of the base
• Hardens or toughens the surface of the base
• Waterproofs the surface of the base by plugging capillary or interconnected voids
• Provides adhesion or bond between the base and the asphalt mixture
In order for the prime coat to satisfy these functions, some asphalt must penetrate into the base. Prime coats generally are being used less frequently, particularly when the total asphalt thickness is 100 mm (4 in.) or greater. With increased asphalt thickness, there is less possibility of surface water penetration into and pavement slippage on the base. A prime coat should be considered, however, when a granular base is to be carried through an extended period, such as the winter months, or when to be exposed to abrasion damage by traffic. Even though some engineers question the benefits of priming, it should be considered when any doubts exist about the results if it were eliminated.

This process removes the Oil Content in the Bitumen and it is oxidized. Fuel oil is added to the process to make the penetration higher, if it is required to do so.
The oxidized bitumen, still at higher temperature, to be handled carefully and packed into Bags or drums as required. The associated safety and work place hazards need to be handled efficiently.

Cutback Bitumens (liquid Bitumens) are Bitumens that are dissolved in a petroleum solvent (cutter). Typical solvents include naptha (gasoline) and kerosene. The type of solvent controls the curing time of the cutback and thus when it will obtain its ultimate strength. Rapid curing cutbacks use naptha (gasoline) while medium curing cutbacks use kerosene. The amount of cutter affects the viscosity of the cutback Bitumen. The higher the cutter content, the lower the viscosity and the more fluid it will be.
The advantage cutbacks have over emulsions is a much higher residual Bitumen percent, typically over 80 percent. This compares with just over 65 percent for Bitumen emulsions. The result is more Bitumen cement left on the roadway after curing, for the same volume of binder applied.
Cutback Classification
Cutbacks are divided into two classifications, Rapid-Curing (RC) and Medium-Curing (MC)
depending on the solvent used. They are further defined by a number which indicates the minimum kinematic viscosity (fluidity) of the cutback. The lower the number, the more fluid the cutback is.

Chemicals are added in order to decrease the time for the reaction time for blowing which shall have better control over the blowing conditions to produce different grades of Oxidized Bitumen with low capital investment.
Blowing is preferably done from the bottom of the Chimney/ Tower and the Temperature can be controlled by Water Jacketing.

Based on specifications it may contain other additives, such as stabilizers, coating improvers, anti-strips, or break control agents. The actual performance of the bitumen depends on the total performance of a bitumen / aggregate mixture which again depend as the design of the mixture, the way it was mixed and how it was laid and compacted.
Minimise the time during which hot bitumen is exposed to air. Bitumen hardens and loses some of its adhesive property when it is exposed to a combination of air and heat.
Careless mixing of bitumen and aggregate is an example of a practice that exposes bitumen to the air and heat for longer than the minimum time required to coat the aggregate. it is therefore likely to reduce the bitumen's performance as an adhesive.
Keep bitumen dry and away from contamination by water at all times. When it comes into contact with water it will foam.
