NaAlF4 (SAF) is an excellent cost effective substitute for fluoride compounds used as flux. NaAlF4 has been substituted for aluminum fluoride (AlF3), synthetic cryolite (Na3AlF6), natural cryolite and fluorspar (CaF2). It has lower NaF/AlF3 ratio (1:1) than that of cyolite (3:1), making it a suitable material for adjusting NaF/AlF3 ratio or acidity during aluminum electrolysis, saving AlF3 usage. NaAlF4 can be viewed as a mixture of 1.25 parts of cryolite and 1 part aluminum fluoride, both of which are necessary for primary aluminum smelting by electrolysis. In secondary aluminum smelting, SAF could effectively promote the evolving of aluminum liquid and separation of waste.NaAlF4 is also used as slag-conditioning agent/flux in the steel industry. During the deoxidation process, NaAlF4 is added to the slag. The NaAlF4 fluidized the slag and enables better contact with the deoxidizing agent.
